About Plants & Planters by Secret Gardens: Richardson's Garden Center Since 1978
Plants & Planters opened in 1978, back when this stretch of Greenville Avenue still touched farmland. 47 years later we are the second oldest business in the city, and we still do it the same way: real plants, real pottery, real people who know your name by the second visit.

Our Story
47 Years on Greenville Avenue
Chains opened around us. Big boxes came, and some went. Through all of it, this corner of Greenville Avenue kept doing the one thing that does not scale: knowing the plants, knowing the soil, and knowing the people who walk in. Reviewers still write that the staff answered every question and the owner helped them personally. That is not a strategy. It is just how the place has always run.
Today the same building holds a greenhouse collectors drive across the metroplex for, a pottery yard gathered from around the world, and every winter, a Christmas store called Candy Cane Corner.
The Short Version
A Short History of a Long Run
Plants & Planters opens on Greenville Avenue, when this stretch of Richardson still borders farmland.
The Secret Gardens name begins, and the family behind it grows into the garden center's next chapter.
The sign out front says it all: Plants & Planters by Secret Gardens, one business carrying both stories forward.
The pottery moves out, the red carpet rolls in, and the garden center becomes a Christmas store, room after room, through New Year's Day.
616 Google reviews at 4.8 stars, new plant shipments every week, and three cats who believe they own the place.
The People Behind the Benches
You Will Probably Meet the Owner
Read the reviews and a pattern jumps out: people name the owner. Philip is on the floor most days, greeting shoppers before they cross the threshold, walking first-timers through the greenhouse, answering the phone himself. The staff around him actually garden, and reviewers say the same thing about them visit after visit: knowledgeable, patient, and genuinely glad you came.
Meet the Garden Center Cats
Reviewers mention them by name. They accept compliments, tolerate photographs, and supervise all deliveries.
Customer favorite, named in the reviews. Takes greeting duty seriously.
The new hire. Quality control in training, and still dodging the camera.
Head of hospitality for years, and never far from the warmest patch of sun. Missed by everybody who came through the door.
The Family Name
Part of the Secret Gardens Family
The “by Secret Gardens” in our name is our sister company: a landscape design and installation team serving the same neighborhoods we do. The garden center puts the right plant in your hand. Secret Gardens puts the whole yard together.
